Musical Aptitude at Ashmole Academy

‘A child who shows the potential to develop their musical skills and will benefit from the music facilities and opportunities at Ashmole Academy’

Of the 261 places available in Year 7 an allocation of 20 places will be offered to children who show an aptitude for music.

A child who has an aptitude for music is a child who demonstrates potential to develop musical skills, and who we feel will benefit from the plethora of music related facilities and opportunities at Ashmole Academy.

To apply for a music aptitude place at the school, children will be first invited to attend a listening musical aptitude test.  The questions relate to things such as volume of sound, length of sound, speed of sound and texture, to which the children write answers.  Some of the questions are multiple choice. No specific musical theory knowledge is necessary for this test.

If successful in the listening test, children are invited to an audition.  The auditions are not to assess the child’s ability to sing or play their chosen instrument, but to determine whether that child has the potential to develop musical skills, and who we feel will really benefit from the plethora of music related facilities and opportunities at Ashmole Academy.

Children who are successful and come to us in Year 7, become ‘Music Scholars’, and will take part in our Music Scholars Programme.  They will be mentored by a member of the music staff, and will have the opportunity to develop and hone in on their natural musical abilities. They will be expected to be involved in Music throughout their careers at Ashmole, and will be encouraged to take GCSE and A Level Music as appropriate.

Yes. If your child is currently in Year 5 then application forms are available on the website from January 2021.

Which instruments are favoured in order to be successful in the audition?

The auditions assess the child’s potential to develop their skills on any instrument or vocals. A great emphasis is placed on assessing whether the child will benefit from the music facilities and opportunities at Ashmole Academy.
