Careers Education is incorporated into the Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) lessons, collapsed days and tutorial periods with a focus on decision making and self-awareness.
This topic is first introduced to students in Year 7, as they reflect on their achievements to date and start examining career literacy and future pathways. Throughout each Year at Ashmole there are exciting and engaging lessons and collapsed days and other opportunities to help all students make informed decisions about their future.
Year 8 continue with their exploration of future pathways in PSHE lessons. Year 8 also enjoy an Enterprise Day in the summer term where they work in groups to plan, design and present an idea in response to a specific business brief.
Year 9 start building their Morrisby profile which builds an analysis of individual student aptitudes, interests, skills and potential pathways. Student profiles stay with them indefinitely providing detailed independent advice and guidance which changes as student choices and interests change. Parents/Carers are encouraged to work alongside students with their Morrisby profile so they can make informed decisions on their futures. Morrisby profiles can be accessed via student username and password.
Year 10 have inspiring Financial Capability and Employability days where students learn about the rapidly changing world of work, practice their interview technique and start to plan their CVs as well as financial literacy and everyday banking.
During the next academic year, Year 10 will also have the opportunity to meet a wide range of employers on a new collapsed day where they will be able to meet a wide range of representatives from a variety of businesses.
A period of work experience is also arranged towards the end of Year 10.
Students may also benefit from specialist advice from an external fully qualified careers and pathways advisor from year 11 to 13. This is delivered by the School buying in independent qualified Careers Advisers and through our links with Higher Education and Business Sectors. Students are also informed that they visit their local Young Peoples Centre to gain further independent advice and guidance.
A highlight of Year 12 is the Interview Skills Day in December where students apply for a job and have an interview with a range of employers. This is an extremely enjoyable and challenging day for students.
In addition, individual mentoring assists students with regard to post 16 and post 18 options. Senior members of staff act as an advisory team for those looking for places at university or other higher education institutions. Further collapsed days focus on interview skills.
Career and pathways opportunities are available on Firefly and are also displayed on our digital screens around the school.
Furthermore, at each key stage, information evenings for students and parents, enable students to be informed about their choices and the career pathways open to them. There is also a specialist evening on Morrisby for parent/Carers of Year 9 and 10.
The Careers staff can access and manage Morrisby and ensure students are maximising what is has to offer and constantly evaluates how it is being used.
There are regular student evaluations on collapsed days and PSHE/SMSC lessons. The Careers Leader ensures that the school surpasses the government requirements on Independent Advice and Guidance.
