Year 8 trip to Normandy Eighty six pupils spent five days in France at the end of term, staying in a small hotel in Agon-Coutainville which is a small town by the sea in Normandy. As well as visiting famous tourist attractions like the Bayeux Tapestry and Le Mont Saint Michel, the groups visited a zoo in Champrepus and had the opportunity to practise their French in the town of Bayeux where they bought whatever they fancied for their picnic lunch from the stall-holders. The discos were as entertaining as ever with many Super Heroes in evidence (Mr Incredible was spotted at one of the discos). The last day was spent at the French theme park "Festyland" before our return home.
University French Taster Session for Year 9 On Thursday 6th July, Dr Baldwin, Head of the Modern Foreign Language department at the University of Kent, came to deliver a taster session to our most able Year 9 linguists. The session included an introduction to the study of literature at university as well as information about language study at university. The session proved both popular and motivational with students.
German Exchange: This year twenty two Year 9 students participated in the German exchange between Ashmole and Docemus School in Berlin. In May, we welcomed the German students to Ashmole. Activities included a trip to Greenwich, a Quiz night, and a cricket taster session. The reciprocal visit took place in June and students relished the opportunity to improve their language skills. Highlights included a visit to the Reichstag, and a tour of Berlin. The visit to the holocaust memorial proved thought provoking for all.
European Work Experience Westminster Skills Club: Year 12 students returned to Ashmole after the Easter break, having benefited from these two initiatives. Students on work experience enjoyed the authenticity of their language use, in diverse placements (including a zoo). The French students who took part in the Westminster skills club particularly enjoyed the sessions on the then upcoming presidential elections.
Languages in the Primary school: In March, the Languages faculty showcased language learning at the Academy to primary head teachers. The visit included observations of Spanish in reception class, and in Year 7.
Technology in the classroom: On 2nd Nov a team of visitors from Apple observed how iPads are used in language classrooms at Ashmole. Since then, a pilot Year 11 class has practised its general conversation through a class conference call with teachers in Germany. This proved very motivational and successful, with students seeing the tangible value of their class learning. Further such conference calls are planned with our partner school in Germany.
German Cinema trip: On Wednesday 8th February, students studying AS and A-Level German made the most of the opportunity presented by the screening of “Toni Erdmann” at Crouch End Picture House to build their cultural understanding. Cultural references are a crucial element in the new specification, and students enjoyed the learning experience.
Languages Week: In September, to coincide with the European Day of Languages, the Languages faculty ran a series of activities for students. These included taster sessions in new languages, run by staff and students from across the school community. Students also enjoyed subject specific starters which drew on linguistic skills.
