German Exchange Trip to Berlin

Year 10 Student Exchange with Docemus Privatschule in Grünheide,  Berlin

Between 29th September and 4th October, 22 Ashmole students embarked on the reciprocal leg of the German exchange with Docemus Privatschule in Grünheide in the outskirts of Berlin. The group were welcomed into the homes of their partners, who had visited Ashmole in May. The group benefited from their immersion in the German language and culture, gaining invaluable language and communication skills. It was very pleasing to see how the students integrated with the students from Docemus, striking up friendships that will hopefully last into the future. The exchange included a walking tour of Berlin with the German partners and teachers as well as a boat trip on the Spree and a visit to the Holocaust memorial, which proved thought provoking for all involved. The students particularly enjoyed their visit to the East Side Gallery on the 3rd October “Tag der Deutschen Einheit” (The Day of German Unity) where they were able to see the murals on a stretch of the Berlin Wall. The group listened to some of the history of the wall and it was special that they were there on the anniversary of this historic day. The students spent the weekend with their host families, taking part in a range of activities planned by their partners. On the final day of the trip the group had the opportunity to observe lessons in the German school followed by a meal prepared by students and teachers which completed a highly rewarding and enjoyable trip. We look forward to the next leg of the exchange and the continuation of this thriving exchange with Docemus in the coming years.

Going on the Berlin Exchange has helped me gain so much experience, more than I had expected. Living with a German family helped me to understand the pronunciation as well as helping me practise speaking German. Also I got to understand the history of Berlin which dates back to the 13th century! The best bit was when we went bowling and went to a restaurant. The restaurant was one of the nicest I’ve ever been to. Overall it was an experience I will never forget.” Sebastian Heymans 10M1

“My exchange has been an incredible experience for me. I have gained so much knowledge about the Berlin culture and the language through my host-family and friends. I will cherish all the amazing experiences I’ve had!” Louise Freeman 10N2
