Year 12 Interview Skills

We aimed to provide for students an understanding of the main qualities, attitudes and skills needed to enter and to thrive in the working world.

On the 23rd October 2013 we welcomed approximately 40 business volunteers to interview our Year 12 students, following their application to a fictitious job. Students were briefed in advance and supported through our Tutorial Programme. They had to submit an application form, covering letter and CV and had to work to a deadline.

Through the programme, students developed a greater understanding of how to prepare for interview, how to structure and answer interview questions and greater awareness of what an interview entails. In addition the business volunteers gave useful feedback on their application and tips for improvement.

Both the Business Partners and our students enjoyed the event. A number of quotes give a flavour of that experience.

Students:

‘Brilliant preparation for future experiences’

‘It has helped me to understand what to expect from an interview’

‘Good interviewer – he really helped me’

‘The interviewer was very helpful. She politely told us things to work on’

‘Preparation in an interview is really important’

Business Partners:

‘A very well organised event. Students were polite and engaged with the activity’

‘A fine bunch of students who performed really well at their first interview’

‘Enthusiastic students, good to see such willingness’

‘Students should choose their own CV format’
