Further Mathematics

Why Choose Further Mathematics?

Further Mathematics is a challenging qualification, which both extends and deepens your knowledge of A Level Mathematics.  Students who passionately enjoy Mathematics will welcome the challenge of Further Mathematics and explore new sophisticated mathematical concepts.  Further Mathematics qualifications are highly regarded and warmly welcomed by universities.  Students who take Further Mathematics are really demonstrating a strong commitment to their studies, as well as learning mathematics that is very useful for any mathematically rich degree.  Some prestigious university courses require you to have a Further Mathematics qualification and others may adjust their grade requirements more favourably to students with Further Mathematics.

What will you learn?
A Level Further Mathematics builds on the pure mathematics in A Level Mathematics and you will study further applications in Statistics, Mechanics and Decision Mathematics.
Pure - extends topics from A Level Mathematics, to include Proof, Complex numbers, Matrices, Further algebra and functions, Further calculus, Further vectors, Polar coordinates, Hyperbolic functions and Differential equations.
Further Pure Mathematics – includes further trigonometry, further calculus, further differential equations, coordinate systems, further vectors, further numerical methods and inequalities.

Why study Mathematics at Ashmole Sixth Form?
Ashmole Academy is respected for being a highly academic place of education, where the students are supported, challenged and encouraged to achieve to their fullest potential.  A small number of A Level Mathematics students decide to study Further Mathematics.  In the Mathematics department we encourage a collaborative learning environment, creating a wealth of experience and support for you, not just from the teachers, but from your peers also.

Which subjects go well with English Literature?
Many A Level subjects go well with Further Mathematics.  You will find what you learn particularly useful in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Economics.

Where will it lead you?
For progression to many courses at university, it is important to have strong Mathematics skills.  If you are considering studying a degree in Sciences, Engineering, Computing, Finance/Economics or perhaps Mathematics itself, you will benefit from taking Further Mathematics.  Further Mathematics introduces new topics such as matrices and complex numbers that are vital in many STEM degrees.
